FROM THE OCEAN TO THE SKY

Hillary, Sir Edmund

Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1979, First U.K. Edition. 272 pp, endpaper map and 9 other maps and drawings, 13 colour and 47 B&W photographs. Unique and quite amazing expedition by Jetboat up the Ganges. From the Bay of Bengal all the way to the Himalayan snows, and then made first ascent Akash Parbat, traditional source of the river. Hillary's story is sprinkled with descriptions of passionate greetings from crowds of Indian people. Whether Hindu holy men, Sikh pilgrims, rural Bengali villagers or hysterical Calcutta crowds, all turned out lining the river banks cheering and wishing them well. Quote: At every teeming city ghat and wharf, at each remote refueling stop, the people of India, fisherman, city dignitaries, village elders, excited school-children, ancient porters, and yogis, all responded with an outpouring of warmth and enthusiasm to honor the pilgrimage of these Western travelers. Signed on Title Page by author and leader Ed Hillary and by team members Jim Wilson, Mike Dillon, Mike Hamilton and Mike Gill. Flyer for new release of film loosely inserted, three signatures added on that occasion. DJ, Near Fine.
